FMG Golf Day

sun set

Keeping in sprit with the Poker night I decided to tag along to my work’s golf day last Sunday.

I was expecting 9 holes with my boss and a few mates from work at his local club, not the mammoth 18 hole country club tournament that I found my self in. Fortunately, I was still playing with two other guys from the dev team who were also relative golf-n00bs (or so I thought)!

Now, as to my own skill level I should probably clarify a little. When I was at school I did golf as a games option, mainly to get out of doing anything that involves actually physical work and the risk of getting dirty… Despite not playing in 7 years my games lessons (and a very kindly neighbour) have left me with my own half-set of clubs and a good understanding of why my swing sucks.

It was an early start, for a Sunday at least, and we got to The Hainault Forest Golf Complex by 11:00 am. In my group were Rob (who was so hung over he couldn’t face a free breakfast) and Tim, we were second from last to tee off from about 6 groups, all from FMG.

After a few minutes in the driving range the rain was so heavy and the wind so strong that we were getting soaked while standing in relative shelter, then the thunder and lightning started. This didn’t look good. Ten minutes later all was clear again and we were teeing off… and despite some heavily water logged greens, sand traps and pretty much everything else… the weather was really good.

I was playing OK, but it wasn’t worth me keeping score! I’ll put it that way… The rest of my group were playing very well and despite the group behind snapping at our heals, we were keeping up nicely. Well, we were until we let the group behind over take us and then we just fell apart! Speaking personally the hunger caught up with me, but the others said it was because we lost our sense of urgency with no one at our heals! I knew it was bad when Rob started asking me questions about code to keep my mind off how hungry I was!

We made it 14 holes before low light and low blood sugar levels forced us to stop play… Next time I’m gonna insist we play in the summer and bring a picnic hamper with us!

I’ll leave you with this video of Rob with his hand on his club, whacking the hell out of his balls…

    Impressive grip on the shaft…
    Unimpressive trousers.

Was that the soggy car park bunker he’s playing out of?

All looks a bit Jeeves and Wooster to me.
