New Photos
One of the things I wanted to do when I started working on this site (about 5 years ago) was show case some of my own work, especially my photography.
Now five years later, while I never finished writing my own blog framework, I have got word press installed and some of my code, thoughts and a few musical recordings published… but until now no photography.
I own 4 digital cameras and Aperture tells me I have 4740 images in my library, why I have not published any until now? I don’t know, maybe I still hold hope of get my own CMS up and running (it was really neat - chatted to Aperture with SOAP and Apple Events) or maybe I’m just being lazy again, who knows.
Any way, here are 3 new photos that I took last night… I’m not sure if I should offer any explanation or not, perhaps not.

Creativity began where reproduction ended…
I spent last night and most of this evening reading about Man Ray and studying his work, I found a number of things interesting… Firstly there is the obvious comment about photoshop… Most of the manipulation techniques used by Man Ray (Solarisation and Super impositions to name but a few) are so easily reproduced in photoshop that it almost seems strange that they were ever considered art… even stranger is the fact that his early work had to be explained as a happy accident, denying the hours of work in the dark room to achieve the desired effect.
However, what I found more interesting was one biographer’s discussion of the demise of portrait artists in the wake of the explosion in photography and how this effected Man Ray’s attitude toward his medium. As photography had robed the ability to reproduce a likeness of it’s skill, portraiture (regardless of medium - be it painting or photographic) was no longer considered an art form… just copying. It was with this back drop that Man Ray embarked on a series of photographic experiments meant, in my mind at least, to produce something greater than what was before the camera when the shutter was opened.
But perhaps the most interesting thing of all is the name given to the monograph of Man Ray’s work I own, ‘Photography and its Double’, which is an obvious reference to ‘The Theatre and its Double’ by Artaud, the French surrealist play write/director… more to come on him, I hope.
The Artaud connection is one of many cross overs from Man Ray and other influencing spears in my own sphere of influence. Maybe I will discuss these at a later date, in the mean time any one interested in Man Ray’s work should take a look at: http://www.manray-photo.com

Played a quick game of COD2… all day.
Yeah… although I did do some research into Word Press plug-ins and read through some books on/by my favourite artists in an effort to get inspiration for some kind of skin for this site. I was very taken by a photo called ‘Lampshade’ by Man Ray:

Man Ray’s work has always been a favourite of mine and a huge inspiration in my own more surrealistic photography (more on that to come… I hope), so it would be fitting to base the skin for this site on one of his pieces… but then again, why not one of my own?
While all this sounds very much like I’ve been productive today… the truth of the matter is that from about 3 pm until about 5 minutes ago I have pretty much just been gaming! Oh well…
